But Chelsea chairman Abramovic informed his fellow countryman Dzagoev that the club would sign him regardless of Grant’s wishes.
‘It’s true that Abramovich told us if we want to go to England, we just need to tell him,’ Dzagoev told Sport Express.
‘But at the time, the situation was a very confusing one for me. So, I decided to stay with the club.’
Dzagoev, 29, opted to remain in Moscow where he’s been since 2008 and has gone on to make over 300 appearances for the club.
The midfielder has also won 59 caps for Russia, scoring nine times and was part of their 2018 World Cup squad that reached the quarter-finals.
At different stages of his career, Dzagoev had been linked with both Tottenham and Arsenal too, but insisted that he was never approached by either club.
