‘Benjamin Mendy gave me stick on there for my level of English when I first joined Everton on loan from Monaco. He was threatening to put out my first interview in English on Twitter.’

Sidibe has already been part of two great teams, the 2017 Monaco Champions League semi-finalists which included other Premier League imports Bernardo Silva and Fabinho, and the French national team.

His friend Pogba is currently injured but Sidibe could face another pal Anthony Martial on Sunday if the United forward recovers from a twinge in his thigh.

The pair played together for France in 2016 when Martial was tipped to be the next big thing before stalling at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho.

Now he’s back to his best and has scored in his last three games. Sidibe says: ‘He’s more experienced and has more responsibility with Marcus Rashford injured. I know what a handful he can be and think he’s more dangerous than ever.

‘Sometimes there is chat between friends in the tunnel before games. You might say something like: “Take it easy!”

‘As a defender, the biggest thing is to win the first one-to-one battle. If you go in reasonably hard, you’ve made your mark psychologically. They know you mean business.’

Sidibe has been an important part of the Carlo Ancelotti revival at Goodison Park that has seen Everton climb from relegation danger to European prospects.
