- But Dani Carvajal was fouled by Mathias Olivera in the area with 11 minutes left
- And Sergio Ramos converted from the spot to put four points clear at the top
A Sergio Ramos penalty moved Real Madrid four points clear at the top of LaLiga. It wasn’t pretty but Zinedine Zidane will not worry about that as he closes in on his second LaLiga title as a coach.
It’s little wonder he is canvassing for skipper Ramos to be given a new contract. The 34-year-old is now in his last year and there is no sign of Real Madrid offering him a new deal but he has proved his worth time and again since football returned post lockdown.
It was the 21st straight penalty that he had converted. The interrupted run-up and the dropped shoulder seemed to be an attempt to entice Getafe keeper David Soria into diving early so that Ramos could produce his now almost customary ‘Panenka’ style kick.

There was no movement from Soria so Ramos just rolled the ball into the corner underneath the delayed dive.
Another Madrid stalwart – Dani Carvajal – had won the penalty. After a string of highly dubious penalty kick awards in LaLiga with players going down untouched or even forwards fouling defenders and still being awarded spot-kicks, this one was beyond dispute.
