Lille’s sporting director Luis Campos received a miniature model airplane from Star Alliance after racking up an incredible 240,000 miles scouting players in 2018.
The Portuguese, formerly technical director at fellow Ligue 1 side Monaco, has presided over an impressive summer of transfer business.
And his shrewd additions to Lille’s squad are due in part to his scouting forays across the globe last year, which made him a group of airline companies’ biggest customer globally.

Despite slipping to defeat against Amiens on Saturday, the Ligue 1 outfit are largely expected to surprise many this season, despite the departure of electric winger Nicolas Pepe to Arsenal.
But the transfer secured Lille a healthy £72million fee, which partly has been carefully reinvested back into the squad under the watchful eye of Campos.
Young striker Timothy Weah was secured in a £9million move from French champions Paris Saint-Germain, while Yusuf Yazici and Victor Osimhen are among several other promising additions to manager Christophe Galtier’s ranks.

Campos’ work as sporting director has even attracted praise from Jose Mourinho, who said that his national compatriot ‘lives, eats and thinks football’.
He told L’Equipe: ‘He is a great professional who is arriving at the peak of his powers. His skill-set is very complete. He was manager, notably. He has accumulated experience at all levels. He profits from this. He is very intelligent and, also, available 24/7.
‘But I can say that he is a great sporting director. I speak often with him. I know his ways of work. He works an enormous amount.’
Campos’ stellar work in the transfer market at Lille hasn’t passed under the radar either, after Chelsea, Arsenal and Roma were all linked with his services in the summer.
