Portland Timbers vs. NYCFC in MLS is Back tournament quarterfinals: Live Updates

The Portland Timbers will play New York City FC in the quarterfinals of the MLS is Back tournament at 7:30 p.m PDT Saturday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

The game will be broadcast nationally on Fox Sports 1. John Strong will be on play-by-play with Stu Holden as the analyst.

The winner will advance to the semifinals and will play the Philadelphia Union. Philadelphia advanced with a 3-1 win over Sporting Kansas City on Thursday.

Portland advanced to the quarterfinals after beating FC Cincinnati on penalty kicks in the round of 16. Forward Jaroslaw Niezgoda scored to put Portland up 1-0, before a mistake from goalkeeper Steve Clark allowed Cincinnati to tie the game. The match went to penalty kicks, with Clark redeeming himself and Niezgoda scoring the winning PK.

NYCFC finished third in Group A, and upset Group C winners Toronto FC in its round of 16 match. NYCFC went 1-0-2 in the group stages before the 3-1 win over Toronto.

The Timbers enter the game with two fewer days of rest than NYCFC, though both teams come into the game with momentum behind attackers playing well. NYCFC has scored five goals in its last three games, and Portland coach Giovanni Savarese talked about how many of his attackers are stepping up over the course of this tournament.

Portland won the last meeting between these teams 1-0 on July 7, 2019, in New York. NYCFC has only beaten Portland once, in 2016 in Portland. In three meetings since the 2016 loss, Portland hasn’t conceded a goal against NYCFC.
