The hosts, being officially the lowest-ranked team to ever host the World Cup, had their chances written off before the tournament began, having been placed in what looked like a tough group with Uruguay’s Luis Suarez and Egypt’s Mo Salah.

Yet, where giants such as Germany and Argentina faltered against the likes of Mexico, Iceland and Croatia, the Russian team sailed through to the knockout stages.
