Liverpool could take Salah and Shaqiri transfer route with defensive target

Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis appears to be the frontrunner to be the defensive recruit that Liverpool bring in this summer, with cover at left-back required.

There has been the suggestion in some quarters that Liverpool see Lewis as someone who could also slot in at centre-back should he be needed, with Dejan Lovren no longer at Anfield having moved to Zenit for £10.9million, but he would primarily arrive as back-up for Andy Robertson.

Last summer, Liverpool wanted Lloyd Kelly, who ultimately moved to Bournemouth for around £13million. The England under-21 international can play at both left-back and centre-back, and was deemed a realistic target last summer when talks were held.

On the Analysing Anfield podcast, Josh Williams said: “Kelly is still only 21 and Liverpool wanted him last summer when he was at Bristol City still.

“He is English, homegrown, a good athlete, mobile, left-footed and he’s ticking the boxes. Robertson is currently the only left-footed defender at the club and that needs resolving if it can.

“That will be interesting to see if Liverpool go back for him. They do have a thing where they might go back for a player who was linked in 2013 and four years later, they sign him.

“Liverpool were linked with Mohamed Salah when he was at Basel, and Xherdan Shaqiri they were linked with when he was at Bayern Munich.

“They usually keep an eye on these players even though they have moved and the fact that Kelly has gone back down to the Championship, that would be an interesting solution.”

Even if Liverpool were to acquire Lewis this summer, more defensive reinforcements might well be needed over the next few years.
