And several reports in Spain claim that City have set a £31million price tag over Garcia’s head, with one report saying that Barcelona are close to landing the defender.

The deal would be an initial £20million fee, with the remaining £11million to be paid in add-ons.

A move to Barcelona would see him return to the club that nurtured him through his developing years, with Garcia a product of the famous La Masia academy that has produced the likes of Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and Cesc Fabregas.

The 6ft defender, who was born in Barcelona, joined Manchester City as a 16-year-old in 2017 during Guardiola’s second season in charge of the Premier League club.

Garcia made his first-team breakthrough in Guardiola’s side this season, featuring 22 times in all competitions during the 2019-20 season due to an injury to first-choice centre-back Aymeric Laporte.

The Citizens lost just twice out of the 13 matches in which Garcia featured in defence.

Guardiola revealed in his news conference ahead of Friday’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid that the club tried to get Garcia to extend his deal, but the teenage defender has his heart set on a move away.
