Portugal stars smile in the rain as they train at Hampden Park before Scotland

Portugal players were put through their paces as they trained at a damp Hampden Park ahead of their friendly with Scotland on Sunday.

Fernando Santos and his reigning European champions took to the pitch in the damp conditions in Glasgow on Saturday morning as they look for their second win inside three days.

Renato Sanches is back on British soil after his horrid loan spell at Swansea and will be keen to continue his resurgence this season. He joined players in completing a number of possession and set piece drills ahead of the game against Alex McLeish’s team.

Portugal’s Bernardo Silva scored a typical individual goal as their new-look side recovered to win 3-2 away in Poland in the Nations League on Thursday.

Andre Silva’s strike and a Kamil Glik own goal put the European champions ahead by half-time, after Krzysztof Piatek had given Poland an early lead, and Silva then got in the act early in the second half.

Poland substitute Jakub Blaszczykowski, making his 103rd appearance as he became his country’s most capped player, pulled a goal back but it was not enough for the hosts.

Scotland, meanwhile, will be desperate to put in an improved performance after they fell to an embarrassing 2-1 defeat by Israel on Thursday night.

Santos has played down suggestions that Portugal put in an improved performance due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence against the Polish.

Ronaldo was left out of the squad amid rape allegations, which the 33-year-old vehemently denies, following an incident in a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.

‘No team can be better without the best in the world, it’s not worth talking about who’s not there,’ Santos said.

‘When Cristiano plays, he is more advanced on the left side and gives us more ability to finish.
