Aouar feels staying at Lyon will help him be a part of France’s Euro 2021 squad, according to French media outlet RMC Sport.
The Frenchman was linked with Arsenal throughout the transfer window but it looks like he will remain a Lyon player for the 2020/21 campaign. Arsenal were not willing to meet Lyon’s £45.5 million valuation of the 22 year old and negotiations between the two clubs have come to a halt.
The Lyon academy graduate feels that the lack of a pre-season to integrate into any potential new club could have a negative effect on his ability to have a good season.
According to Lyon insiders, Aouar knows that he is one of the stars of the French side and has the support required to have a good chance of being included in France’s squad for next years’ European championship. He has been called up by France boss Didier Deschamps for the upcoming international games and is determined to make a place for himself in the national team.
Another factor that influenced his decision is the fact that he felt he would be leaving the club through the backdoor on the eve of the transfer deadline and didn’t want to do that. Lyon failed to qualify for the Champions League last season and Aouar wants to help them get back to Europe’s top table before leaving the club through the front door at the end of the current campaign.
By staying at Lyon for another year, he will hope that a host of European clubs will be interested in signing him next summer. Arsenal were the sole club to make a concrete offer for him in the current transfer window but Juventus, PSG, Real Madrid and Manchester City are known to admire the player and could be better positioned to sign him in 2021.
