Dembele’s refusal to leave meant funds weren’t freed up to buy Memphis Depay from Lyon
But in the end, Dembele chose to remain at the Nou Camp and his decision scuppered Barcelona’s efforts to sign primary target Depay from Lyon for £25million.
According to ESPN, Barcelona were left infuriated that Dembele opted against the move to Manchester after coach Ronald Koeman made it clear he wouldn’t play a major role this season.
Koeman wasn’t planning to include Dembele in his 23-man squad for last Thursday’s LaLiga against Celta Vigo until Junior Firpo suffered an injury.
Dembele has been an unused substitute in each of Barcelona’s matches and his prospects of playing regularly this season appear to be slim.

Dembele now looks set for a season on the bench as he doesn’t feature in Koeman’s plans
Koeman wanted to sign Holland international winger Depay as part of his overhaul of an underachieving Barcelona team that failed to win any silverware last season and lost 8-2 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
But Dembele, who has struggled at Barcelona since his £135.5million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, didn’t move and funds were not freed up.
Dembele has scored 19 goals in 75 appearances for Barcelona in a stay hampered by injuries.
Barcelona were also reportedly annoyed that defender Samuel Umtiti didn’t leave the club despite being told he wasn’t in Koeman’s plans.
