Liverpool have less than a week to wrap up their transfer business, with Premier League clubs still permitted to do business with their EFL counterparts between now and Friday.
The Reds have made three senior signings this summer, bringing in Kostas Tsimikas, Thiago and Diogo Jota, while Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana are among the several senior players to move on.
We could see further permanent or loan exits this week, while there has been talk of Jurgen Klopp’s side exploring the possibility of goalkeeper cover from the second tier.
Here’s the latest on a number of transfer stories involving Liverpool targets and members of their current squad who could find themselves on the move.
Barcelona still keen on Wijnaldum
Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum was linked with a summer switch to Barcelona, following the appointment of former Dutch national boss Ronald Koeman as manager at Camp Nou.
A transfer never materialised, but that doesn’t mean the Reds are out of the woods just yet, with Wijnaldum’s Anfield contract due to expire at the end of June.
Koeman has told Nos that Wijnaldum was on his ‘list’ over the summer as he attempts to build for the future in Catalunya.
Wijnaldum was part of Koeman’s Dutch squad which reached the final of the Uefa Nations League in 2019, playing the full 120 minutes of the semi-final victory over England.
The Barcelona manager has only made one permanent signing since taking the reins in August, bringing in Dutch-born United States international Sergiño Dest, and is considering adding more Dutch talent to his squad.
Reds urged to sign Ben Foster
Liverpool have been linked with a number of goalkeepers from the Championship after Adrian’s worrying performance at Aston Villa, but it remains to be seen whether they will add to their squad before Friday’s deadline.
Plenty of noise has been made about Stoke City’s Jack Butland, but another England international could be available in the coming days.
Ben Foster suffered relegation to the Championship last season, but the veteran was one of the better performers for a Watford side which went down by a single point.
And former England striker Kevin Phillips, who began his league career with the Hornets, has urged Jurgen Klopp’s side to move for the 37-year-old.
“If I was Jurgen Klopp, I would go for Ben Foster,” Phillips told Football Insider.
“He was outstanding for Watford last season, even though they went down. Foster is a safe pair of hands, even at his age.
“I would pick him over Jack Butland. Foster has been far more consistent and has the greater experience as well.”
Liverpool could face Chelsea battle for teenage stars
Even if Liverpool don’t make any senior additions to their squad this week, a move for two up-and-coming EFL talents could be on the horizon.
