Leeds fans applaud Liam McCarron for his goals against Newcastle U23

Leeds United suffered a 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United’s Under-23 side on Friday afternoon as the Whites went from 3-0 up to 4-3 down in a topsy-turvy match – and Whites supporters have applauded the efforts of winger Liam McCarron.

It was an excellent game as Leeds went 3-0 up just before half-time, to losing the match to Newcastle in injury time 4-3. McCarron, 19, starred throughout in what was only his second PL2 outing since his £300k (News & Star) move from Carlisle.

He opened the scoring after the ever-impressive Joe Gelhardt reached the byline and pulled back a low cross, which saw McCarron swing a left foot at – flying into the top corner. The Scotland Under-19 international made it two moments later.

A lovely cross from fellow Scot Stuart McKinstry saw McCarron head home with aplomb. A Gelhardt header followed, but Leeds were not done. Yannick Toure got one back for Leeds in the dying embers of the first half.

In the second 45, it was all Newcastle. A mistake from Elia Caprile allowed Elliot Anderson to score a penalty on his 18th birthday, before Nohan Kenneh could do little about his own goal. In injury time, Stan Flaherty rolled in a fourth.

Leeds supporters reacted on Twitter to the news that McCarron had impressed and scored two goals for Mark Jackson’s side. Despite the defeat, many applauded the young Scottish attacker.
