‘A massive gamble’ – Ex-PL manager latest linked with Sheffield Wednesday job:

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict‘ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Former England and Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is reportedly interested in the vacant Sheffield Wednesday job.

Garry Monk was sacked earlier in the week and The Athletic has reported that Eriksson is keen on the role as he eyes a return to English football.

But would he be a good appointment? And is he the right man for the job?

We asked our FLW writers for their thoughts…

George Harbey

I’m not sure that he’d be the right man for the job to be honest.

Above all, Wednesday need a manager who knows the Championship well, and knows how to pick results in order for them to start climbing up the table and away from the relegation zone.

Sven has obviously managed at the highest level and has taken charge of several international sides, but he’s never really made an impact in charge of domestic clubs and that would be a concern for me.

The game has changed since taking charge of the likes of Manchester City and Leicester, and I think there are better options out there.

It looks as if Tony Pulis will be the man in charge, and I think his experience will bode him well.

Did these 17 Sheffield Wednesday players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

Well this has come straight out of left-field.

There’s no doubt that Sven-Goran Eriksson was a top-level manager back in the day, but I think that his time has passed.

In my opinion, the appointment would be a massive gamble.

Given the precarious situation that Sheffield Wednesday find themselves in, I think they need a safe pair of hands and someone one knows the Championship well.

Plenty of names have been linked and as brutal as it sounds, I think that any one of them would be better than Eriksson.

Sorry, Sven.
