Real Madrid will not swoop in to save Paul Pogba, Camavinga and Haaland are

PETE JENSON: Paul Pogba will be left heartbroken if he thinks Real Madrid are his get-out option… Zinedine Zidane is on the brink, Eduardo Camavinga is the midfielder they crave and fans want Erling Haaland from Mino Raiola’s stable of superstars

Real Madrid are in the process of asking their players to take a 10 percent pay cut to save the club from recording huge losses at the end of this season – if Paul Pogba thinks the Spanish club are his express escape route out of Old Trafford he is probably mistaken.

‘He has to change teams. He has a contract that will expire in the summer of 2022, but I believe the best solution is to sell in the next market,’ Pogba’s agent told Italian newspaper Tuttosport this week.

If by ‘next market’ Mino Raiola means January that really does rule Madrid out.

Is the club’s chief executive Jose Angel Sanchez really going to go from one meeting with the Madrid players asking them to take a massive pay cut, to another in which he tries to sign a £270,000-a-week midfielder currently behind Fred and Scott McTominay at United? No, probably not.

Next summer it’s hard to say how the financial football landscape will look but if United try to recoup even half of the £89million they paid for Pogba then Real Madrid are unlikely to be in the queue.

They have their eye on the talented RB Salzburg’s Dominik Szoboszlai, on Rennes’ brilliant teenage midfielder Eduardo Camavinga and if the club sign anyone from Raiola, Madrid fans want it to be Erling Haaland – not Pogba.

The 18-year-old Camavinga wants to move next summer so Madrid will have to make their move or risk missing out on a player valued at around 50m euros. He’s attracted interest from almost every top club in Europe so they know the fight they will have on their hands.

Like Pogba, Camavinga’s contract runs out in 2022 but he is nine years younger.

Attacking midfielder Szoboszlai will also be free in 2022 and if offers are made in certain time limits his fee could be closer to £25m. Real Madrid also have Martin Odegaard and Fede Valverde in midfield. They want those two, 21 and 22 years-old respectively, to be the future.

It is in attack where they desperate need a long-term replacement for Karim Benzema and where Haaland is the obvious choice if Madrid can somehow make it work financially.

If Pogba were to have a sensational Euros and if Zinedine Zidane were to lift another European Cup for Real Madrid and then demand his compatriot in the summer then the stars would come closer to alignment.
