Manchester United ‘add Brighton star Ben White to their transfer wishlist with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also targeting moves for Raphael Varane and Dayot Upamecano’ in order to bolster his leaky defence in January

  • Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Brighton’s Ben White
  • The defender has caught the attention of a host of Premier League clubs
  • United are looking to plug their leaky defence with two other defensive targets
  • Real’s Raphael Varane and Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano are on United’s radar

Manchester United have reportedly added Brighton star Ben White to their centre back options for the upcoming transfer window.

The 23-year-old has started all 11 Premier League games for the Seagulls this season, forming a solid defensive partnership in a back three with Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster on the south coast.

According to Manchester Evening News, United are huge admirers of the English defender and will weigh up a move for him in January along with Real Madrid star Raphael Varane and RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to address the problems with his leaky backline, which has already conceded 17 goals in just 10 Premier League games this season.

They also conceded 10 times across their six Champions League outings, with poor defensive displays against Istanbul Basaksehir and RB Leipzig contributing to their disappointing third-place finis in Group H.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof’s performances have been criticised as of late, leaving Solskjaer resigned to the fact that defensive reinforcements are needed.

United have long been linked with a move for Real Madrid’s Varane and will look to make a move for him again despite being told last month that the Frenchman was not for sale by Zinedine Zidane.

Upamecano could also provide Champions League experience to United’s defence but a move for White appears most likely.

The Red Devils will also likely face competition for White, who has been linked with Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool in recent months.

White spent last season on loan at Leeds United and played in every single Championship game as he helped Marco Bielsa’s side gain promotion to the top flight.

Leeds tried to sign him permanently in the summer but a bid in the region of £25million was rejected and he signed a new four-year deal at the Amex Stadium.

Prior to his season at Elland Road, White spent time on loan at Newport County in League Two, and Peterborough United in League One, working his way up the EFL ladder before solidifying a place in the Brighton starting XI.
