Edouard Mendy matches Kepa Arrizabalaga for clean sheets since last season in 29

Pundits’ concern over Edouard Mendy allayed as he keeps his 10th clean sheet in 16 appearances for Chelsea in 3-0 win over West Ham… matching the same number made by Kepa Arrizabalaga in 45 matches under Frank Lampard

  • Chelsea bounced back from two defeats with a 3-0 win over West Ham United
  • Concerns were raised over Edouard Mendy following mistakes in recent games
  • Gary Neville before the game said the 28-year-old needed a ‘mistake-free night’
  • The 28-year-old though kept his 10th clean sheet since joining from Rennes
  • It took Kepa 29 more games to reach that number under Frank Lampard

Edouard Mendy reached an impressive milestone of his tenth clean sheet in just his 16th game since his summer move to Chelsea.

The 28-year-old had a relatively quiet game during their 3-0 win over West Ham, but the impressive statistic is a very telling figure of the improvement Chelsea have made since he signed from Rennes.

Mendy was signed during the summer transfer window for £22m, as Frank Lampard looked to sort out their issue in the goalkeeping position.

Kepa Arrizabalaga was the regular starter for Chelsea before Mendy, however he struggled during Lampard’s first season back at Stamford Bridge as manager.

In fact, it took the Spaniard a massive 45 matches to reach ten clean-sheets since Lampard’s appointment.

Mendy, along with the signings of Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell, the improved form of Kurt Zouma and the impressive Reece James have all been seen as vital parts of Chelsea’s improvement defensively from last season.

Chelsea had gone a massive 17-games unbeaten before consecutive defeats to Everton and Wolves last week.

His clean sheet allayed concerns that Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher expressed before the game, following some mistakes in recent games.

One of the errors pointed out was Mendy clattering into Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Everton’s penalty that won them the game against Chelsea.

Neville said before the game with West Ham kicked off: ‘We thought he had initially solved their goalkeeping issue.

‘Kepa had a massive problem – every shot that was going on goal looked like it was going in.

‘And then first six games he had those five clean sheets but in those six games he only had eight shots on his goal and what we’ve seen in the last few games, is mistakes are starting to build. He needs a mistake-free night tonight.’
