Pundits make their score predictions for Man City vs Newcastle United

Man City will be looking to make it ten games unbeaten in all competitions when they host Newcastle United this evening.

Pep Guardiola’s side could go as high as third with a win depending on results elsewhere and go into the game in decent form having beaten Arsenal 4-1 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Yet positive Covid tests for Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus represent a pre-match blow as Guardiola weighs up what side he will name to face the Magpies.

Steve Bruce’s side crashed out of the Carabao Cup to Championship side Brentford on Tuesday.

Here is how pundits think the game will go.

Mark Lawrenson – BBC

“Newcastle did not play well against Brentford when they went out of the Carabao Cup in midweek, and they only managed a draw at home to Fulham last weekend.

“The Magpies will have to do a lot better than that to get anything at Etihad Stadium and I don’t see it happening.

“Having Sergio Aguero back fully fit to lead their attack would be a big boost for City but I would expect them to beat Newcastle even if he isn’t ready.”

Prediction: Man City 3 Newcastle United 0

After Manchester City reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals once again in midweek, the focus now turns back to the Premier League.

The Blues host Newcastle on Boxing Day evening, before a tricky trip up the M62 to play Everton on Monday December 28.

Michael Owen – BetVictor

“Things are starting to look on the up for Manchester City. Unbeaten in five, they have been solid of late, especially at the Etihad where they are undefeated in 16 of their last 17 matches.

“What’s most impressive is their defensive record. City have only conceded two goals in their last nine matches.

“I can see that being the case again here. Newcastle’s record against the top sides leaves a lot to be desired, so I’ll be going for a comfortable home win.”

Prediction: Man City 2 Newcastle United 0

Dimitar Berbatov – Metro

“There will be no surprise here. City have had their problems this season but they’ve tightened up at the back and I expect them to find their rhythm against Steve Bruce’s struggling team.”

Prediction: Man City 3 Newcastle United 0
