The Blues had looked genuine title contenders after a summer spending spree, though were leapfrogged by their next opponents on Boxing Day after a listless 3-1 London derby defeat against a struggling Arsenal side.
Things looked to be going better on Monday when a much-changed team took the lead through Olivier Giroud’s first-half header, but Anwar El Ghazi struck shortly after the interval to leave Chelsea with just one win from their last five top-flight matches.
Earlier on Monday, Crystal Palace were denied a valuable home victory against high-flying Leicester after Harvey Barnes struck late to cancel out Wilfried Zaha’s stunning volley at Selhurst Park.
There are five fixtures on Tuesday, with Arsenal looking to build on that win against Chelsea with a trip to Brighton and relegation rivals Burnley and Sheffield United going head to head at Turf Moor.
West Ham travel to Southampton after their home draw with Brighton, while Sam Allardyce’s West Brom – lifted after claiming an unlikely point at Liverpool on Sunday – host Leeds at The Hawthorns and Manchester United entertain Wolves in the late kick-off.
The midweek action wraps up on Wednesday, when out-of-sorts Tottenham host Fulham in another all-London affair and leaders Liverpool head to Tyneside to play Newcastle.
