FA fail in their bid to extend Kieran Trippier’s ban for breach of betting rules

Kieran Trippier’s ban continues to run… despite the fact he’s still playing! Atletico Madrid defender may not miss any more matches as FIFA rule his 10-week suspension for betting breaches WILL end on February 28 regardless of appeal

  • Kieran Trippier was handed a 10-week ban by the FA for breach of betting rules
  • He served less than two weeks before Atletico appealed and FIFA paused ban
  • FA tried to extend end of ban but have been unable, meaning it ends on Feb 28
  • That means Trippier could reach end of his ban without missing another game

The Football Association has failed in an attempt to extend Kieran Trippier’s 10 week betting ban, a move that could have jeopardised the defender’s availability for the European Championships.

Trippier had served less than two weeks of his suspension, which is applicable worldwide, before it was paused by FIFA following an appeal by his club Atletico Madrid.

The sanction was imposed after the FA found Trippier guilty of providing information to friends regarding his transfer from Tottenham to Spain in 2019 which he knew they were using for betting. The ban is due to expire on February 28.

And it emerged on Thursday that the FA asked its own independent regulatory commission to revise the dates of the suspension until FIFA decided on whether the suspension should apply beyond England.

But the FA confirmed on Thursday that the appeal has been rejected, meaning the suspension on Trippier playing in England expires on February 28, even if the FIFA part of the case is still ongoing.

It means Trippier misses no more games in this country once the appeal is heard.

If the FA’s attempts to extend the ban were successful, Trippier’s participation for Atletico’s Champions League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in March, his inclusion in the England squad for March’s World Cup qualifiers and this summer’s European Championships would have been at risk

Earlier this month it was revealed that Trippier sent friends a series of WhatsApp messages, prompting a string of bets from their recipients.

On July 14, three days before his move to Atletico was confirmed, Trippier was asked by a friend: ‘Shall I lump on you going there (Madrid)?’

Trippier replied: ‘Can do mate.’

The friend continued: ‘100% Tripps?’. Trippier replied: ‘Yeah mate,’ before adding, ‘Lump on if you want mate.’
