Chelsea were Europe’s biggest spenders as transfers dip for first time in decade

What were the figures behind Chelsea’s outlay and who did they buy?

In the summer transfer window Chelsea splashed more than £200 million on transfer fees for Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy as they looked to reshape their squad.

Havertz was the most expensive player in the world last year.

Chelsea also had a transfer ban for the January 2020 window.

Who else was in the top 10?

The top 10 UEFA clubs were:

  1. Chelsea
  2. Manchester United
  3. Manchester City
  4. Barcelona
  5. Juventus
  6. Leeds United
  7. Tottenham Hotspur
  8. Benfica
  9. Napoli
  10. Wolverhampton Wanderers
What happened with the number of transfers?

There was a decline in the number of international transfers for the first time in the last ten years.

The total number, 17,077, represents a decrease of 5.4 per cent compared to 2019, although the number is still slightly higher than 2018.

Which country had the highest number of outgoing players?

England had the highest number of outgoing transfers, 867, and the third highest for incoming transfers, 698.

Meanwhile Brazil was the association with the highest number of incoming transfers, 1,015 and the second highest number of outgoing transfers, 820.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Chelsea might have topped the list for last year but they are already planning this coming summer’s spend.

Simon Johnson had the latest on their transfer plans in David Ornstein’s column on Monday.
