On This Day: City retain Carabao Cup and Dzeko makes it sweet 16

Memorable moments, matches and events from this day in our history…

February 24

2001: City snatched a crucial 1-0 triumph at Newcastle United to record our first Premier League win for 11 weeks.

Shaun Goater’s lone strike, his seventh of the season, overshadowed the return of former England captain Alan Shearer from a two-month lay-off.

The Bermudan strike’s all important strike came in the 63rd minute, picking his spot in the far-left corner of Shay Given’s net.

It was his first goal since City’s last Premiership victory, a 5-0 demolition of Everton in the first week of December and saw us close the gap on fellow relegation-battlers Middlesbrough to just one point.

2011: Edin Dzeko scored two early goals and Yaya Toure added a third to help ease City past Aris Salonika 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium and into the Europa League last 16.

City were held to a 0-0 draw in the first leg but £27m January signing Dzeko slotted the hosts in front before curling in a second soon after.

After Mario Balotelli’s shot hit a post, Toure fired home via a deflection to seal a 3-0 aggregate win.

City’s reward was a last-16 assignment against Ukrainian outfit Dynamo Kiev.

2013: Superb second-half goals from Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez helped City to a hard-fought 2-0 Etihad triumph over Chelsea and so reduce the gap to Manchester United at the top of the Premier League to 12 points.

City were rewarded for a more attacking approach in the second period, after a first half in which we missed countless chances, Jack Rodwell and Sergio Aguero both going close to scoring for the hosts.

We were almost made to pay when Frank Lampard had a glorious opportunity to register his 200th Chelsea goal, but his penalty was saved by Joe Hart seven minutes after the break.

Eleven minutes later City were finally in front when Yaya Toure kept his composure in the box to steer an angled shot into the bottom corner from 10 yards.

And Tevez made the game safe with a blistering shot from 20 yards five minutes from time.

2016: City took command of our Champions League last-16 tie against Dynamo Kiev with an impressive 3-1 first-leg success in Ukraine.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men dominated the first half and Sergio Aguero slotted in an opener before a slick move let David Silva side-foot in a second.

Vitaliy Buyalsky pulled one back with a deflected shot before he had another effort excellently saved by Joe Hart.

However, Yaya Toure curled in a superb shot late on to restore City’s two-goal lead.

2019: City won a dramatic penalty shoot-out to win the Carabao Cup against Chelsea and retain the trophy we had lifted the year before.

The teams couldn’t be separated…
