Barcelona announce the £55m capture of Ferran Torres from Man City as Pep Guardiola lets the Spain star go less than 18 months after landing him… with Xavi’s first signing penning a contract with a €1BILLION release clause

  • Barcelona have completed the £55million signing of Ferran Torres from Man City
  • The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Catalan giants
  • Torres’ contract at the Nou Camp has a whopping €1billion release clause

Manchester City are not planning on signing a replacement for Ferran Torres, who completed a £55million move to Barcelona.

Torres left the North West last week to spend the festive period at home in Valencia and is set to be unveiled at the Nou Camp on Monday.

Barca will pay the initial £46.7m fee in instalments, while City are content with their attacking options without the 21-year-old.

That will serve as encouragement to youngster Cole Palmer, who has made 10 appearances and scored a first Champions League goal so far this season.

Palmer, an England Under-21 international, can play in any of the three forward positions and offers Pep Guardiola more versatility as he continues to rotate his team on the hunt for trophies.

Barcelona have inserted a whopping £841m release clause in the five-and-a-half-year contract handed to Torres and hope he can spearhead their revival under Xavi.

Torres was unveiled in a video on Barcelona’s official website on Tuesday, where he lined up alongside a number of the club’s other promising youngsters, with Pedri, Ansu Fati and former City team-mate Eric Garcia.

Guardiola did not stand in his way, with City boasting seven different options to fill the front line ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Brentford.

City are expected to sign Sergio Aguero’s long-term replacement next summer and hold an interest in Erling Haaland.
